Cause of Interstitial Cystitis

We do not really know what causes interstitial cystitis. Current theory is that some cats may have a problem with the protective layer of the bladder. So if a cat is under "stress" of the bladder wall may become inflamed. The process is very similar to having an ulcer stomach.

How do you know if it was stressed that your cat? Sometimes we do not know what causes stress, but some possible reasons are:

  • Moving to a new home
  • New people visit home
  • New pets in the house
  • When the owner is under stress
  • Home Renovations

Then there are the cats who are dissatisfied with this problem and can not find the cause.

Symptoms of interstitial cystitis

  • tend to urinate
  • frequent trips to the trash
  • blood in urine
  • urinate in unusual places

If you have a male cat with these symptoms, you should also consider a much bigger problem, the FLUTD (feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease).

The diagnosis of interstitial cystitis

If your cat is one of the above symptoms to your veterinarian will have to do a urine test. The most common sign of blood in the urine of interstitial cystitis without crystals or bacteria present. Unfortunately, the only way to ensure that the diagnosis is biopsy or endoscopic examination of the bladder wall. But in most cases, blood can be seen under the microscope are sufficient to diagnose a cat with interstitial cystitis.

The treatment of interstitial cystitis

Unfortunately, there is no treatment that works consistently in cats, but there are several types of products that are often prescribed.

In many cases, if we can reduce swelling in some days the cat will recover. Anti-inflammatory medications often used Metacam or Tolfedine. Your veterinarian will use these drugs only if there is no evidence of a problem impairment.

For many cats, interstitial cystitis may be a recurring problem. For these cats that we may use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs more often. Without however, many veterinarians will prescribe anti-anxiety medication called amitriptyline. Amitriptyline is generally safe and well tolerated. However, it will be necessary to every day. It comes in pill form and most cats the taste of the pill. It comes in a transdermal formulation is applied inside the ear. However, patch drug absorption is variable and is not recommended to use this method.

Another product that is often suggest using Feliway. Feliway is feline a pheromone is a chemical that is released into the air that has been shown to reduce stress levels. It is available as a plug in diffuser or spray. This Article has a great discussion about the research that shows Feliway really works.

Another thing that helps cats is increasing the amount of water they take in. This can be done by adding a water source. The source follows the water movement makes it more attractive to cats.

Your veterinarian may recommend foods like Royal Canin sc / or canned food or Hill / d for several canned foods. These foods work well for increasing the amount of moisture through the bladder. They also help keep the pH of your cat's urine to a level that is recommended to reduce inflammation.

Interstitial cystitis may be a recurring problem, but with proper monitoring and close communication with your veterinarian, most animals can be well controlled.
